Somehow it is December already, which means the holidays will be here before you know it. Here are a few sweet things I have my eye on this year.

1. Long Arm Chandelier $299 I think this would look just perfect in my office/dressing room.
2. Personalized Camera Neck Strap $80 I'd love to pretty my camera up with a leather camera strap like this.
3. Huyana Cuff $48 So simple and lovely.
4. Rodin Olio Russo $140 I've heard incredible things about this face oil and I am dying to give it a try.
5. Pierre Faceted Terrarium $55 I am obsessed with octagons and terrariums. This combines the two.
6. Restoration Hardware Flatiron Dining Table $695 Dreamy table and the price is quite reasonable.
7. Little Birch Jewelry Stand $32 I desperately need something to hold my growing jewelry collection.
8. Crosley Ranchero Radio and Ipod Dock $169 My Bose stereo died earlier this year and I would love a sleek and slightly retro replacement like this.
9. Tribal Jute Rug $99 for 4x6. So amazing. Saw this in the store and have not stopped thinking about it since.
10. Gold Athena Tray $45 It's gold and a feather. Love.

Thanksgiving in Ojai was truly perfect. I was reminded that just an hour and a half north of LA there are fall colors to be found, the air smells sweet and childhood traditions are alive. Dinner was delicious- we enjoyed brined turkey and pumpkin tiramisu. My mom read us a poem she wrote on how thankful she is for all eighteen of us at the table {getting us all a little teary eyed}. As the sun started to set, we took a walk around the property and took in the landscape and the blooming fruit trees. Everything was so magnificent it was overwhelming really. And on what better day than Thanksgiving to be overwhelmed with natures beauty? We ended our night with wine by the fire and a game of celebrity. I feel thankful to be part of such a loving group of friends and family. You all made my day complete.

Yup, that's right- I finally got an iPhone and practically the first thing I did was sign up for Instagram. Having a phone that takes such amazing photos has already changed my life. If you'd like to follow me please do @sweetthing_. If you aren't on Instagram, not to worry, I will be posting my photos on twitter as well.

How was your Thanksgiving weekend? Mine was perhaps my favorite one yet. We ate delicious food, spent time with friends and family, played lots of celebrity, went to the movies and I didn't pick up my computer once. Heaven. I can't wait to share photos with you!

Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday and I am thrilled it's almost here. I am so looking forward to spending the next few days in my hometown, eating delicious food with family and friends. Our Thanksgiving dinner is usually a mix of my mother's New England upbringing and her best friend's southern one. Really the best of both worlds. I find comfort in tradition and I can always count on two things- my mom getting teary eyed while giving a speech about how thankful she is and that we'll end our night playing either running charades or celebrity. Do you have any traditions that wouldn't feel like Thanksgiving with out?

Instead of my normal sweet sound mix, I am sharing the most devine EP of covers that my friend Jessie Baylin just released. Jessie was one of my very first friends when I moved to LA and it has been such a joy to see her career grow through out the years. I have not been able to stop listening to this EP since I first heard it. Believe it or not she recorded this last week on a 4 track in her living room! I highly recommend a listen- you will fall madly in love. Oh, and look for the release of her album Little Spark in January.

How was your weekend? Mine was simple and perfect. I got to catch up with one of my oldest friend's who was in town and enjoy a rainy day in with some hot tea and a stack of catalogues. Can you believe Thanksgiving is this week? It snuck up on me. This year we are headed up to Ojai to have Thanksgiving with my family and Lilly's family. We have spent practically all of our holidays together since I was born and I just love it. Do you have a particular family that you always spend holidays with?

18 November 2011

This last week has been challenging in many ways, but sometimes it's those difficult times that allow you to stop and think about how truly blessed you are. I feel like I have mentioned before how my life has been in a state of flux over the last year. There have been so many changes, and for someone who thrives on routine it has thrown me for a loop. I must admit, I've had moments of feeling sorry for myself. When I start to go to that place, it's the little things that pull me out, like a friend dropping by to bring me fresh bread from the farmer's market, my boyfriend doing silly dances around the house or a hilarious game of charades. As much as I adore beautiful things and write about them here daily, it is really laughter, learning and a human connection that make life truly "sweet". Here is a little look into my life of late and a few of the things making me smile...
  • A perfect evening celebrating Miss Lauren's birthday with a game of charades, champagne and fabulous conversation. Isn't this card gorgeous? It was made by Lili and photographed by Lauren.
  • The guinea feathers I ordered from Etsy to adorn this year's Christmas gifts.
  • A brunch date with my guy at Casita Del Campo for juevos rancheros and the most delicious chips and salsa.
  • Indulging in my favorite blueberry pancakes from The Black Cat Bakery on a rainy day.
Happy Weekend! xo

17 November 2011

I am so excited to introduce this new addition to the blog, where I will be sharing beautiful homes and inspirational spaces. For my first post I will take you inside the home of my dear friend Kate Danson {you might remember her sweetest day}. Kate is an actress and a photographer who lives in LA with her husband Jesse and their adorable pup, Birdie. Kate has always had an eye for style and I am consistently amazed by the ease in which she mixes and matches eras. I had far too much fun photographing every corner of her home. Please enjoy...

What is your design aesthetic and how has it evolved though out the years?
When I was younger, most of my furniture consisted of hand me downs that I would mix with flea market finds and collected objects. Since moving into a modern house,  my style has changed quite a bit. I still have lots of flea market pieces that I've held onto over the years, but now I mix them with modern pieces. I've started to love how it looks, it makes the house feel cozy and warm.

Does your taste in fashion meld with your taste in home decor?
It does! I've never even thought about it but the truth is that it does. I love vintage clothing and still have a few hippie dresses that I wear quite a bit. But I also love contemporary designers and more tailored/modern shapes. Freaky.

What are the 5 items you cherish the most in your home and why?
1. Pink corduroy Sofa. It was one of the first things my husband and I bought together for our new house and we both instantly fell in love with it.  For him it was more about the corduroy and for me it was the pink!

2. Orange Moroccan Rug. The cabinets in our house are orange and we almost repainted them... what we were thinking I'll never know! It has sparked a serious love affair with all things orange and the rug is the object in our house that I love most. I've always fantasized about going to Turkey or Morocco to buy rugs, so this rug is functioning as a sort place holder until that fantasy of mine can be realized.

3. White Leather Bent Wood Chair. I bought this chair years ago at the Rose Bowl for nothing. It was the first piece of furniture that I bought for myself in college and really I can't imagine ever falling out of love with it.

4. Horse Painting. I subleased an apartment years ago that had the most amazing western horse portrait hanging in the living room.  For years I searched high and low for a painting like it and came up empty handed.  Being all too familiar with this horse portrait obsession of mine, my husband ended up tracking down this painting and surprised me with it on my birthday.

5. Record Collection. I have a great collection of 78's that were once my maternal grandfather's, mostly jazz and classical, as well as my parents old records that they listened to in the 70's.  I feel so lucky to have them and love listening to them whenever I get the chance.

What was the hardest item to find for your home?
Actually, the hardest item, I still haven't found yet...good dining room chairs. We bought our chairs at West Elm and they're great but they're not quite right. The search continues.

What are your favorite places to shop for your home, both stores and online?
I like looking online at 1stdibs, Design Within Reach, and Lawson and Fenning for inspiration, and occasional purchases. I've found some great things at West Elm like chairs and rugs. Of course the Rose Bowl flea market is amazing if you're not looking for anything in particular. That's when I've found the most unexpected pieces. There's a furniture store on Abbot Kinney called Surfing Cowboys that has amazing vintage furniture from the 60's and 70's. Another great store is Mohawk General Store in Silverlake- they have great ceramics and light fixtures, not to mention clothes and jewelry.

2. Manila Gift Tags $10 for 50
3. Kraft Paper $8.21
4. Photo
5. Cruelty Free Guinea Feathers $3
6. Jute Twine $3.35

I saw these beautifully wrapped presents on oh, hello friend and was immediately inspired by their simplicity. I love the idea of using kraft paper and twine as wrapping because it is seasonless.  Attaching an old photo or a guinea feather makes is feel personal. For the holidays you could dress it up with a sparkly gift tag or a sprig of pine.

Here is another outfit from last week in Marin. I have been wearing my asos coat nonstop along with my loeffler randall smoking slippers. They have quickly become staples in my wardrobe. I found these blue sunnies at Anthropologie recently and couldn't believe the affordable price tag. Since I tend to be drawn to a lot of neutrals I love the subtle punch of color they add to an outfit...
